Supersonics Piano Method Level One is designed for complete beginners and will provide 1-2 years of material. The target age range is 6-12 but it is suitable for all ages (older beginners may be more suited to Quick Start A though). There are three ways to effectively use this method:

  1. Use this book in conjunction with the free material in Supersonics Plus
  2. Subscribe to Supersonics Plus to experience the full comprehensive program (if you are a Plus subscriber you can print all the pieces in this book as part of your membership).
  3. Use this book as the repertoire, technical and creative base for your teaching/learning. You can then add your own aural and theory programs.

Modules: This book features the first 11 modules in the course (there are 30 in total). Each module is targeted towards a particular technique, note-reading range or rhythm making it easy to understand and to integrate supplementary material.

Techniques: Six fundamental techniques are taught in this book. These give students a very strong technical foundation.

Note-reading: On the stave notation is taught from the very first piece and the reading approach is intervallic + landmark note based. A unique feature of this method is the inclusion of repetitive melodic patterns that serve as "building blocks" for pieces.

Transposing: As the note-reading range is intentionally limited throughout this book other keys are explored by transposition.

Rhythm: Any rhythmic system can be used with this method (e.g. French rhythm names or counting) making it very flexible and adaptable.

Style: The greater majority of this book consists of original pieces by me! These are composed in an engaging, contemporary style. In order to expand a student's musical range I have also included folk tunes, nursery rhymes, canons and popular classic arrangements (an exploration of more "authentic" classical repertoire is included in Levels Two and Three).

Creative: This book includes call and response pieces, simple harmonization exercises and an introduction to composition.

Popular harmony: A unique feature of this method is the inclusion of the structured development of practical contemporary harmony skills ("pop" chords). This commences in Module Ten and continues throughout the rest of the method.

Supersonics Plus

Supersonics Plus is the online system that works in conjunction with this book in order to give you the "complete" method experience. Supersonics Plus features:

Rote pieces: Every module in this book has several rote pieces associated with it. You can use these pieces to introduce or consolidate new techniques/concepts and to challenge students with a different style of learning  (although it is recommended that you use these pieces they can be omitted without any detriment).

Backing tracks: Every original piece has a backing track. Practicing with backing tracks is a great way to develop a strong sense of beat.

Teacher duets: Every piece in the first eight modules has a teacher duet. These develop a student's ensemble skills.

Supplementary repertoire: Supersonics Plus features a huge library of supplementary pieces.

Theory: a structured online theory course is included in Supersonics Plus. The course is highly practical and is based on the repertoire featured in the method.

Rhythm Builders: Every piece has a Rhythm Builder worksheet associated with it.

Improvisation: Every module in this book has an improvisation piece to explore.
