Watch your students fall in love with the piano, using the Supersonics Piano method – starting with this Level 1 book for beginners.

These fun, inspiring pieces will excite your students from the get-go, encouraging them to develop a regular practice routine and take pride in their progress.

Book 1 of the method takes a playful, open-minded approach to teaching students to read music, developing core techniques, learning to transpose and harmonise.

It features creative activities for students, encouraging them to make up their own melodies, train their musical ear and consolidate learnings with repetitive melodic patterns across fun-to-play pieces – making it easy to understand and integrate new music. View the complete level overview

You can access the online theory, rote pieces, improvisation exercises and teaching resources for free in the Supersonics Plus App or you can combine this book with the Level 1 Theory and Level 1 Resources books if you and your students prefer to work from printed books.

LOOK AND LISTEN

The main emphases in this module are technique and rhythm. Students should aim to play their pieces in time, with a graceful Rocket Launch technique (detached single note technique). The audio samples feature the teacher duets. Listen to the free backing tracks and view the online support material

(turn your phone sideways to view the samples)

Students’ technique is expanded in this Module to include Lift Off (for joining short phrases). The reading in this Module is based around melodic patterns. This Module introduces transposition. Students will continue to work on their transposing skills for the rest of the level. The audio samples feature the teacher duets. Listen to the free backing tracks and view the online support material

This Module introduces the Blast Off technique (for wrist staccato). Check for a supported, elastic wrist. We also introduce dynamics. The audio samples feature the teacher duets. Listen to the free backing tracks and view the online support material

Module 8 features pieces that are great fun to play and make excellent concert pieces. It’s a chance for students to consolidate and really enjoy their playing. The audio samples feature the teacher duets (where available). Listen to the free backing tracks and view the online support material

Level 1 features integrated theory sheets. You can either complete these online for free or purchase the print book.

The Rote Pieces are designed to be used as an integrated part of the progression through Level One. I recommend using these pieces to introduce the new techniques and rhythms before you begin teaching the notated pieces in each module. This allows a student to focus on acquiring the new skill without having the added pressure of reading. Online scores and recordings are available in the Supersonics Plus App or you can purchase the print book.

The Improvisations are designed to introduce a student to basic improvising and also enhance a student’s technical and rhythmic development. You use one piece per Module. Online scores and recordings are available in the Supersonics Plus App or you can purchase the print book.

All the resources required to teach and learn Level 1 are available online for free. You can also purchase the print book.

Q: It looks like a lot of the pieces are in “C position”. Is this the case?

A: No. By using different finger combinations, wide-ranging rote pieces and transposition early in the book and small stretches and moving around the thumb later in the book students avoid getting locked into a 5 finger mindset.
