“HAVA NAGILA”

Description: This piece originated in the Ukraine as a wordless chant. Words were added in 1918 and it became a prominent Jewish nationalist song during the first World War. It is now widely used at celebrations. Although this piece is in A minor, the first four lines use a mode of the harmonic minor scale known as the Phrygian dominant scale. This is what gives the melody its exotic sound. You should observe the repeat signs in this piece. Make sure you get louder and faster on line 5!

Level: Mid Elementary (what does this mean?)
