“THE CANCAN”

Description: The cancan is a high-energy dance that was a popular music hall dance in the 1800s and has continued its popularity in French cabaret to this day. The most distinctive move in the cancan is the high kick. This particular “cancan” was composed by Jacques Offenbach in 1858 for his operetta Orpheus in the Underworld. The piece is actually titled the Infernal Galop and wasn’t originally composed as a “cancan”, however it has since been appropriated by the dance community and is now most widely associated with the music of the cancan. Aim for a lively, exuberant performance.
